Inflammatory Bowel Disease Holiday Tips

Below are my top 4 tips for navigating the holidays with inflammatory bowel disease or food allergies to help you enjoy the season to your fullest!

  1. Bring a dish that you tolerate well to the holiday party or gathering. - Navigating parties or social gatherings with food can be challenging when not feeling well or having an IBD flare. Bringing a dish that is well tolerated so you know there will be at least one dish that you can enjoy.

  2. Start a non food tradition with family and friends. - Cookie exchanges can be complicated when following dietary restrictions such as gluten free, dairy free, or FODMAP dietary restrictions. Swap a cookie exchange for a fun sock exchange, ornament exchange, homemade bath salt exchange, or a candle exchange for just a few ideas.

  3. Avoid trying new foods at events or parties. While we know food is not the only trigger for symptoms to occur it is one, so being careful of food choices at party can help changes of feeling your best during the event. If there is something you really want to try save a plate to take home and try it in the comfort of your home.

  4. Stay relaxed - The holidays can be hectic. Take short cuts to stay relaxed including curbside grocery shopping, online shopping, or decorating with friends and family.
